How big A4 really looks

It is the standard sheet of paper in most of the world, used for small art prints, illustrations and certificates. Its long side, 30 cm (12 in), is about the length of a forearm and hand, and 15 % of the height of a standard interior door. In area it covers 0.06 m², about 1 sheets of A4 paper.

Where an A4 print fits

It suits a desk wall, a shelf, a kitchen or a bathroom, and a grid or gallery wall in any room.

  • In portrait, an A4 print is 21 cm (8 in) wide, narrower than any furniture it could hang above on its own, so it belongs in a group or on a narrow wall.
  • In landscape, an A4 print is 30 cm (12 in) wide, narrower than any furniture it could hang above on its own, so it belongs in a group or on a narrow wall.
  • Above a three-seat sofa 220 cm wide, a grid of two rows of 6 portrait prints, 6 cm apart, fills the two thirds of the sofa’s width that looks right.

How high to hang it

On a bare wall, hang an A4 print with its centre 145 to 152 cm (57 to 60 in) from the floor, the eye level galleries use. Above a sofa 85 cm high, keep 15 to 25 cm between the sofa and the frame, which puts the centre of a landscape A4 at about 148 cm (58 in). A4 prints look best in groups. A grid of six or nine, with the same frame and gaps, reads as one large work.

Framing an A4 print

An A4 print is usually matted into a 30 × 40 cm frame, which brings it to a size that holds a small wall.

A4 compared with the sizes around it

One step up, A3 is 29.7 × 42 cm, with about twice the area of A4. The dashed outlines in the drawing show it at the same scale. The nearest size in the inch sizes is 8 × 10, at 20.3 × 25.4 cm, about 21 % smaller in area. See 8 × 10 on a wall.

The file a sharp A4 print needs

Print shops ask for 300 dpi, which at A4 means 2,480 × 3,508 pixels. From the viewing distance above, 150 dpi (1,240 × 1,754 pixels) already looks clean, which is enough for most photographs and digital art.
