How big 8x10 really looks
It is the classic photo print, and the size most frames in a shop window are made for. Its long side, 25 cm (10 in), is about the length of a forearm and hand, and 13 % of the height of a standard interior door. In area it covers 0.05 m², about 0.9 sheets of US letter paper.
Where an 8x10 print fits
On its own it suits a desk wall, a hallway niche, a bookshelf or the wall above a nightstand. On a large wall it works best in a grid or a gallery wall.
- In portrait, an 8 × 10 print is 20 cm (8 in) wide, narrower than any furniture it could hang above on its own, so it belongs in a group or on a narrow wall.
- In landscape, an 8 × 10 print is 25 cm (10 in) wide, narrower than any furniture it could hang above on its own, so it belongs in a group or on a narrow wall.
- Above a three-seat sofa 220 cm wide, a grid of two rows of 6 portrait prints, 6 cm apart, fills the two thirds of the sofa’s width that looks right.
How high to hang it
On a bare wall, hang an 8 × 10 print with its centre 145 to 152 cm (57 to 60 in) from the floor, the eye level galleries use. Above a sofa 85 cm high, keep 15 to 25 cm between the sofa and the frame, which puts the centre of a landscape 8 × 10 at about 148 cm (58 in). Hang a single 8 × 10 a little lower than eye level when it sits above a desk or a nightstand, so it reads with the furniture rather than floating alone.
Framing an 8x10 print
An 8 × 10 print is usually framed in an 11 × 14 inch frame with a mat, which brings it to about 28 × 36 cm on the wall.
8x10 compared with the sizes around it
One step up, 11 × 14 is 27.9 × 35.6 cm, with about twice the area of 8 × 10. The dashed outlines in the drawing show it at the same scale. The nearest size in the ISO A series is A4, at 21 × 29.7 cm, about 17 % larger in area. See A4 on a wall.
The file a sharp 8x10 print needs
Print shops ask for 300 dpi, which at 8 × 10 means 2,400 × 3,000 pixels. From the viewing distance above, 150 dpi (1,200 × 1,500 pixels) already looks clean, which is enough for most photographs and digital art.

About 0.5 to 0.7 m (1.6 to 2.1 ft), one and a half to two times the print’s diagonal of 33 cm (13 in).
