How big should art be above a sofa?

Art above a sofa looks right at about two thirds of the sofa’s width, and up to three quarters for a bolder look. For a 220 cm sofa, that is 147 to 165 cm of art. Fine Art America’s guide and Montcarta’s sizing guide both give this rule.

How big should art be above a bed?

The same two-thirds rule works above a bed, measured on the headboard’s width. A king bed about 193 cm wide takes 129 to 145 cm of art. Go smaller for a heavy headboard, and keep the art clear of the reading lights.

Above a console, sideboard or fireplace

A console or sideboard takes art at two thirds to three quarters of its width, like a sofa. Above a fireplace, measure the mantel and aim for two thirds of it, so the art reads as one piece with the chimney breast.

How high to hang art

Hang the art so its centre sits 145 to 152 cm (57 to 60 inches) from the floor, the eye level most galleries use, as Fine Art America’s guide sets out. Above furniture, leave 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10 inches) between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame, and let that gap decide when the furniture is tall.

Groups of two or three

Treat a group as one piece. Measure the whole arrangement, gaps included, against the two-thirds rule, and keep 5 to 8 cm between frames so the eye reads them together.
